Under the shade of a fig tree, my grandfather sat mending his fishing rod while I observed in silence. Nearby, a folded newspaper lay on the dusty ground. I picked it up, curious about the cryptic symbols it held. "What sound does this letter make?"

There are moments in our careers when something — or someone — shifts our path forever. For me, one of those people was Francesco Tonucci.

There is one thread that, for many years, I overlooked: emotion.

For a long time, I saw learning through the lens of planning, structure, and creativity. I believed in designing thoughtful environments, in nurturing curiosity, and in giving children beautiful invitations to explore the world. What I didn’t yet understand was just how essential emotional connection is—not only for social development, but for intellectual growth.

Although my path may seem to have a clear beginning, I know it stretches far back—woven into the lives and wisdom of many others. Teachers, researchers, educators, parents, and children—among so many more—have helped shape who I am today. I believe every single interaction has left its mark on my journey.
